Malaysia Grabs Nine Medallions Of Excellence At 2013 WSC

SEPANG, July 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysian participants in the World Skills Competition (WSC) 2013 held in Leipzig, Germany from July 3 to 6 took home nine medallions of excellence out of the 14 fields contested.

Human Resource Minister Datuk Richard Riot said it was a proud achievement as it was an international competition participated by 54 countries.

The fields which Malaysia contested in were cooking, restaurant services, fashion technology as well as refrigeration and air conditioning.

Other areas included plumbing and heating, IT network systems, hair dressing, welding and electric installation, he said.

"Cooking contestant Chen Kim Leun is Malaysia's best overall participant in the WSC, garnering 521 points," he said at a news conference after welcoming the Malaysian WSC contingent at the KL International Airport, here today.

Also present were Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Ismail Abdul Muttalib, who led the contingent at the competition, Human Resource Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Zainal Rahim Seman and Skills Development Department director-general Datuk Dr Pang Chau Leng.

The 2013 WSC saw participation from almost 1,024 youths aged 22 and below from 54 countries, with 46 skills areas in the competition.
